Course Description
This course introduces students to the history, theory, and methods associated with the study of fairy tales with a focus on gender. The multiple disciplines and subject areas that will be explored alongside fairy tales in the class include, but are not limited to, folklore studies, literary analysis, cultural studies, anthropology, queer and feminist studies, psychoanalysis, postcolonial studies, film and media studies, and creative writing. The course will also expose students to global versions of tales in a range of media like oral, written, visual, performed, and virtual formats. Our engagement with fairy tales will illustrate how the genre creates opportunities for imagining gender in ways that consider time, ritual, and social transformation.
