The following is a list of the awards presented by our department at the end of each academic year:
Departmental Awards
Chair’s Recognition Award
This award is given by the chair to a graduate student for outstanding contributions to graduate student life during the academic year.
Distinguished Service Award
Presented by our faculty to a student who has gone the extra mile to be of service to the Folklore and Ethnomusicology department.
DFE Summer Research Fellowship
Students may use this fellowship to support pre-dissertation or dissertation field research.
Dorson Dissertation Research Award
This award encourages and provides partial support for original and significant primary dissertation research.
Folklore Fellowship
This award is given to a student based on academic excellence.
Harry and Alma Egan Hyatt Fellowship Award
This fellowship is given to a non-traditional student.
Henry H. Glassie Award
This award is presented by our faculty for exemplary skills as an associate instructor.
John W. Ashton Scholarship Award
Awarded every two years, this award is given to a student based on academic excellence.
Old-Time Music and Dance Research Project Award
This award encourages and provides partial support for the research, study, and preservation of traditional old-time music and dance.
Marie Turner-Wright Grant
This grant supports teaching or research projects in the field of African and African diaspora folklore and ethnomusicology studies.
Ronald R. Smith Fellowship
This fellowship is presented by the faculty in honor of academic excellence as a minority student.
Student Service Award
This award acknowledges students who have gone the extra mile to be of service to the Folklore and Ethnomusicology department. Students receive $50 from Trickster Press and are recognized on a plaque.
