- Above class meets with ILS-Z 604.
- TOPIC: Folklore Archives in the Digital Age
Topic: Folklore archives, digital age
A hands-on introduction to the folklore archive which teaches students about the organization and preservation of manuscript, audio, and digital materials. The course looks at the evolution of the folklore archive from its nineteenth- and early twentieth-century origin to its digital present. Visits to several IU archives will provide students an insight into discipline-specific practices, and the final project will allow students the opportunity to work directly with archival materials. We will look at the challenges and opportunities of digitization by using major online folklore archives, such as the Irish National Folklore Collection (www.dúchas.ie). Finally we will address issues of community access, repatriation, and the ethics of cultural archiving.
