Topic: Sound studies
How do we study sound? This seminar-style class explores tools from ethnomusicology, anthropology, and other humanistic disciplines to examine auditory phenomena that don¿t easily fit into the category of ¿music.¿ The course offers a broad overview of listening practices, the relationship between sound and the environment, and the ways that sound informs identity categories such as race, gender, and disability. In-class activities include soundwalking and a semester-long podcasting project on a topic of your choosing.
