Topic: Indiana folklore
From the stories we tell and foods we eat, to the music we play and the things we make, people use every-day actions to communicate who they are and to forge relationships with others. This course explores the role of folklore in the creation and presentation of self, and how these individual expressions of identity shape the communities, groups, and networks of which they are a part. We begin the course with a survey of the oral traditions of the state. Through legends, jokes, and personal narratives, we will probe how the stories reflect and form the everyday lives of Hoosiers. Next, we will study handmade objects and their makers. From gravestones and quilts to buildings and musical instruments, artifacts provide a lens for understanding the identities and creative lives of people and the communities to which they belong. We will also explore a diverse range of traditional music, foodways, and festivals found in Indiana, and see how identity is constituted through these folklore genres.
