This course examines the supernatural as it touches on the everyday beliefs and practices of people in the contemporary world. In its folkloric context, the supernatural represents a category of knowledge that borders both the scientific and the purely speculative. It remains outside of the empiricism of science and yet does not belong wholly to the fantastic. The study of the supernatural can adapt the methods of science, as in the technology-based approaches of modern ghost hunters; however, it also considers experiential evidence in the form of personal narratives of otherworldly encounters and abductions, many of which fly in the face of rational explanations. This course will address many unanswerable questions about impossible beings and unbelievable experiences. Objective truth is not our goal; rather, we are interested in how, why, and by whom these questions are posed, as well as what various proposed answers to these questions can tell us about the nature of community and culture.
