Topic: Intro to folklore in the us
This course serves as an introduction to folklore in the United States of America. As the proverbial melting pot, the USA is home to a great number of peoples who have been arriving at its shores and sharing their unique collective and individual input for tens of thousands of years. The expressive cultural tapestry that has resulted is unique in the world for its varied range and diversity. In this class, we will explore historical and contemporary manifestations of that elusive academic concept of folklore in the USA. Along the way we will ask: What is and is not folklore; who are the folk; and how does folklore figure into the history of the USA and the ways that citizens interact with and understand each other? In the first portion of the course, we will focus on important verbal genres of folklore such as folktales, legends, folksongs, proverbs, and riddles. In the second half of the course, we will turn our gaze to material culture, food ways, calendrical rites, and physically expressive culture such as dance and performance.
