What is pop? How do transnational movements affect the worldwide distribution of culture and musical style? What makes popular music the same across the globe and what makes it different? This class will explore the breadth and dispersion of popular music across the globe. Touching on topics as wide-ranging as K-Pop, intellectual property disputes, Auto-Tune, and Black Lives Matter, we will use a variety of written and audiovisual materials to consider what unifies and particularizes popular music worldwide. Course assignments will include a range of different writing types, as well as an assignment geared towards considering careers in popular music.
