Topic: Epic and narrative verse
This course provides a broad exploration of critical, theoretical, and methodological approaches to the study of narrative song, particularly various global oral and written epics. Topics of focus will include: the interplay of written and oral traditions, Oral Formulaic Theory, textualization and translation of oral verse narratives, performance theories and contexts, heroic epic thought-worlds, the social and cultural roles served by narrative songs, and the political uses and abuses of epic traditions. While most discussion will center on the genre of epic, much will be pertinent to other narrative verse and prose genres like ballad and saga, and to the broader world of oral narrative and verbal folklore. Some familiarity with one or more epic traditions will be of benefit but is not a prerequisite for taking the course.
