Topic: Folklore & gender
This course explores the role gender plays in the performance, transmission and documentation of folklore: We look at the women and men who constitute the "folk" behind the "folklore." We will look at female and male storytelling- and song repertoires: men and women may tell different stories, or they may tell the same story differently. The class explores the way women and men have used folklore to enhance, sidestep, subvert, and transcend the gender roles allocated to them within their communities.
