Topic: Intro to world music & culture
World Music and Culture is an introductory course in the discipline of Ethnomusicology, which is the study of culture through the lens of music. This course is aimed at challenging Western-centric notions of classical music as the apex of modern culture. From this starting point, lectures and readings will examine the various contexts from which music plays a key role in society, cultural expression, and community building. Rather than assessing the value of various musics as ¿better¿ or ¿worse,¿ ethnomusicology posits that music holds significance for its participants, giving it a unique value and purpose in its local context. What can we learn about politics, culture, and society by examining music, sound, and performance in various locales around the world? Over the span of the semester, we will examine music-making and ¿music cultures¿ by exploring selected case studies from around the world in order to introduce core concepts discussed by ethnomusicologists (such as race, identity, gender, colonialism, globalization, etc). Music can be useful in describing society and culture more broadly, but this course goes one step further, positing that music making also interacts with and shapes culture.
